Average speed cameras, which cover a stretch of the A10 from Cheshunt to Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, were first installed in July 2106 on a trial basis to help stop illegal street racing.
It's now reported, perhaps unsurprisingly, that the racing has stopped and the devices were such a success that they have now been upgraded and made permanent.
£202,000 has been set aside for the upgrade and future maintenance - the money is generated from speeding drivers who have either been ordered to pay court costs or speed awareness course fees.
Hertfordshire's Police and Crime Commissioner David Lloyd commented: "It was obviously very dangerous for themselves and other road users, as well as causing noise and anti-social behaviour for local residents."
Many drivers are still unsure as to how these point-to-point cameras work.
For those that don't know, they work by using automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) which records the vehicle's number plate at each camera position.
Using the distance between positions, the average speed can be calculated by the time taken to travel between two cameras.
So, effectively, your journey is monitored between the devices.
