Another stretch of the A1 is to get speed cameras.

Many lives have been claimed over the years on a blackspot section at Felton, Northumberland, but the authorities are determined to reduce the toll.

Using a mobile speed camera van, Northumbria Police's Camera Enforcement Unit recently clocked 66 drivers in the area breaking the 70mph speed limit in just three hours - three were driving over 100mph.

A spokesman said: "The stopping distance at 100mph is approximately double what it would be if vehicles were driving at the 70mph limit. Driving at that speed is not only dangerous, but completely irresponsible."

He added: "One of the officers enforcing the limits at Felton had attended a fatal traffic accident at the exact same location during his time as a Motor Patrols officer. He was fully aware of the consequences of driving at the speeds recorded and the devastating result the actions of speeding motorists can have on other innocent road users and their families."

Drivers have been warned that more mobile cameras will now be in action along the route in Tyne and Wear and Northumberland.
