Travelling along the A619 on my motorcycle, the other day, I was somewhat surprised to hear Google Maps announce "Speed Camera ahead" (or words to that effect).

It only did it for two cameras on my 70 mile route (544 + 109543 in PGPSW terms). These are very close together and point in different directions. I don't know what the display showed, because my phone was in my pocket.

Anyone else encountered anything like this?

Yup - seems to be a new addition. Although so far it only seems to be fixed cameras and doesn't give any speed.

I suspect Google may very well be as inaccurate / out of date as Cyclops.

Google put a B&M store in the wrong place by about half a mile. I've been continually reporting it, as have others, and they've finally got around to moving it, 9 months later.

There are various hints on the web, that Speed Camera positions are to be gathered by crowd-sourcing - but none of the related options have appeared on any of my Google Maps implementations.

I'm almost certain that I could see these cameras on Google Maps on Wednesday evening after my journey ... but there's no sign of them now.

All very random Confused

Maybe an unnanounced feature for some Google testing.

Which may mean they're on there way.

Wonder where the source data is coming from.

The cameras in Waze are fairly accurate and I think Google own Waze. If so, perhaps they are being imported from there?

Yes, I suspect Waze but then Waze has mobile sites and I never had any of those. I think the lack of speed limit being announced will be the biggest flaw. Seconded by the inability to update locations etc. I'll still be using CamerAlert in the background.

Well if the data is to be crowd-sourced, maybe those flaws will disappear with time. At the moment, CamerAlert knocks it into a cocked-hat Smile

I don't seem to have any of the features mentioned on this web page
https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/11/06/google-testing-crash-speed-trap-reporting-maps/,
but I found I can 'see' speed cameras when a route is selected :-

... I can't find any way of disabling this feature.

If I click on an individual camera icon, it says it was "updated 1 min ago".

Well, they're not directional, they don't include mobile sites and they don't include temporary roadworks cameras - or speeds for any.

I've just driven to The Midlands (sorry, but someone had to...) and kept an eye on the cameras showing in Google Maps versus our database. I suspect they have some kind of algorithm that looks for yellow boxes from StreetView?

I didn't think to install Waze to see if they have roadworks specs on their app but I will do that for the return journey if I remember.

What sets CA apart from the others are the spoken alerts.

I don't need to take my eyes off the road as it announces the camera type and speed. With the likes of Cyclops and probably the others all you often get is a 'bong' and a tiny dot - useless.

That bong mixed in with the other modern car bongs may not draw your attention. If it does you need to check what the prevailing limit is so you can adjust if necessary.
