Should the GPS (TT3 wired) be connected semi-permanently, or at least powered every day?

It seems to take an age to get a fix (10 minutes this morning). It was actually quicker the first time I set it up (almost instant).

Just want to know the best way to keep the GPS 'topped up' if you know what I mean.

hi mrklaw
You should make sure you get a fix
BEFORE you start to move. it can take much longer once you are travelling

Hi,

Can the gps get a fix by been powered without the ipaq connected?

I've often wondered when i'm driving round without my ipaq connected whether I should leave the GPS powered or unplug it.

Thanks

Yes the wired GPS will attain a fix so long as it has power, it does not need to be connected to the PPC.

10mins is far too long though and suggest that either there is a poor sky view or other factors might be affecting reception. What car do you have and where is the antenna situated?

Hi Darren,

Great - Thanks.

I'll just leave it connected all the time then!

Hi Darren.

Car is a Subaru Impreza, mounted on the front dash. Quite often get 6-8 satellites. First time I had it in the front right corner, but only got a few satellites, so I moved it away from the A-pillar, which seemed to help.

just takes a long time when first starting up TT3 (via checkpoint), which is naturally frustrating.

Must say it also really let me down today. Tried to use it for the first time in anger (unfamilar route) to get to kingston and avoid the hampton court flower show area. Had 5 satellites (eventually), but it had me flying around the map and losing me all the time - just as I was going down the back streets. Had to fend for myself and ended up pretty well lost.

Odd that you have these intermittent reception issues and long fix times. The TomTom Leadtek GPS Mouse is normally a star performer with rapid fixes and good sensitivity. Any chance you could try re-locating the receiver to somewhere else on the dash as it sounds like a reception issue to me?
