|
|
Hi guys,
It says on the PGPSW list of compatible systems that "all VIA" tomtoms are compatible. Is the new VIA 135 compatible then? (by 'new' I mean you can still buy it new in Argos etc. with lifetime Tomtom maps)
I thought TomTom stopped producing compatible satnavs a few years ago....
Just want to check before buying a new one because otherwise I will get an older model like the VIA 125.
Many thanks,
Ali |

I believe that you can load user POIs onto your device, but there is no proximity alert for them. So they are about as useful as tits on a bull for third party speed camera alerts. But I may be wrong and a TT expert will be along in a bit to clarify.
EDIT. TT expert present and correct. Seems like I was wrong.

I bought my VIA135 in April 2014, so not exactly new, but there are some still available online, so assuming your model is the same as mine you can install the camera database and set up proximity warnings using MyDrive Connect. _________________ Anita

Are there any clues in the settings that might indicate whether the OP's device is compatible Anita? |

He says he wants to know before buying it from Argos, M8, so probably won't be able to check first, although he could probably return it if he finds it doesn't meet his requirements.
Proximity alerts are set up via Settings | Manage POIs | Warn when near POI, but presumably this option would be present on all devices for setting up warnings for TomTom POIs.
I would be fairly certain any VIA135 currently available would be the same as mine. Surely even TT wouldn't reuse the model name quite so soon! _________________ Anita

A via 135 is the last generation of units which accepts POIs and some are still available. I had one until replacing with a Garmin, I then had to convert all my own user generated POIs to csv format!!

Thanks guys, sounds promising I'll give it a shot and like you say can always return it. Argos are pretty good with returns.
Anita how are you finding the 135 generally? It's got a bunch of really bad reviews on amazon. |

The problem with reviews is that you have to sort the old from new.
The vast majority of reviews for most products tend to be from people who have only had the item for days or weeks and can be misleading.
I try to home in on the ones, if there are any, that say they have had the item for 6 months or so. _________________ DashCam:

Hi Alimckali
Did you purchase the current Via 135 model in the end and if so have you loaded the speed camera database. I'm considering it myself, but the photos look like the later type screen layout and I suspect has the same problems as the start range etc.
thanks.

To answer my own question.
I purchased a TT Via 135 from Argos in Dec 2016 and I have been able to download the camera database and set the Proximity alerts.
In fact the 135 is very similar to the one XL. I just have to get used to the different way of loading the database using Tom Tom drive.
I'm not keen on the fixed mount though.

I'm guessing but presumably this is old stock if it allows the .ov2 files?
If so then whilst you have the database does it have live traffic? _________________ DashCam:

Yes, it's old stock and the last TT model that can use the camera database in a useful manner.
No, it doesn't have live traffic. _________________ Anita
