Two rogue speed cameras have been caught issuing tickets to non-speeding motorists.

The cameras, on the busy A505 Leighton Buzzard bypass in Bedfordshire, were monitoring a 50mph stretch, but motorists noticed that they were being flashed even though they were travelling below the limit.

The high-tech digital cameras were installed last year as part of a £350,000 programme that replaced old wet-film cameras.

One driver, Tom Clarke, who was flashed two evenings in a row, decided to investigate. The first evening the camera took him by surprise as he had set his cruise control to 50mph. The second evening he returned to the area using a speed app on his phone which showed 47mph and he got flashed again.

He reported it to Central Beds Council who responded stating that parameter on the camera had been set incorrectly.

A council spokesman said: "Anyone who has been flashed under the posted limit of 50mph will not receive a ticket."

He added "As it is a digital camera the fault could have been one of many things from a mechanical issue to an issue with the lens. It’s also possible that the wind could have knocked it."

Did the camera show the correct speed, or was the speed incorrect?

Surely if this type of digital camera is affected by wind then it's not fit for purpose and the whole type should lose its approval and be withdrawn.

I think the 'wind' thing is someone talking out of his **** and grasping at straws and making a stupid statement in his ignorance of what was actually going wrong. Probably a finger trouble problem by the installer/service personnel that they don't want to admit to.

I agree, however they were called a "council spokesman" which indicates that the person was officially speaking on the behalf of the council and therefore that person would have been in full knowledge of the facts! Rolling Eyes Wink Laughing Thumbs Up

This is also the same council/PCC who also put a new camera up, also in Leighton Buzzard, Where there's never been a reported accident (an foi request said there had been 3 within a 3 mile radius.....) and therefore isnt an accident blackspot, that the road had upwards of 3 million+ vehicles a year on it (they counted for an hour during the busy school run time and extrapolated over 24x 365....) and they believed that over 33% of those were exceeding the speed limit ... this too wasn't initially set incorrectly and had to be reset... The separate flashing speed warning sign goes off at 25mph too (though I know they are not linked...)

Also I know that camera on the A505, and given its partially hidden behind overgrown trees the "wind" thing is as you say a smokescreen for finger trouble or revenue generating as they are also the same group that recently advocated using the cameras on the M1 for possibly generating additional revenue........
