Help regarding a new Sat Nav

Hello,

I have a TomTom go 910 which I will need to update the maps at a cost of £59.99 for 12 months

So I have decided on buying a new one.

I have 2 models-makes in mind which are

TomTom Via 135 5 Inch Lifetime Maps Full Eu & Bluetooth.

Garmin nüvi 2599LMT-D GPS Navigation System, Free Lifetime Europe Maps and Traffic

I am leaning towards the Garmin, But any help, advice would be greatly appreciated .

Have you considered TomTom on a smart phone. I got it for my phone a few years back and have had free map updates since. CamerAlert from here works in the background for the speed cameras.

There are also free apps for phones, like Waze, etc. I haven't used those, so can't comment.

i have't subscribed to traffic. Now I'm retired, time is not so important!! But I did use traffic a year or so back and found that in London it was not good. Especially in the rush hour. It didn't monitor the side streets and assumed that they were clear. More modern traffic programs should be better, but I found it only worked on long journeys to avoid accidents and was much less useful in the rush hour.

The one big advantage the Garmin has is the ability to use the cameras from here.

I will never even consider a TT until they reinstate third party safety cameras with warnings like they used to.

From what the posts here indicate the latest TT's do have POi's but they are just locations with the ability to use them as navigation points.
With cameras you need to be warned in advance, a feature that is no longer possible.

The camera databases supplied by TT and Garmin are not their bread and butter so are often out of date.

The cameras here are monitored and reported daily. I've not seen a missing camera here for years and that one was under construction when I spotted and reported it.

And .... the Garmin one only gives off a fairly quiet bong which means nothing. The Garmin, using the tools here, can shout out what's ahead so you can keep your eyes on the road.

I don't use Basecamp and I don't use mine for navigation so I'm useless Very Happy

I use mine just for the cameras and digital traffic as my car has a built in SatNav. I use that in preference because it mutes the audio when giving instructions.

However, plotting a route is very easy on the odd occasion where I plot one to test my camera program over a known camera rich route.

Garmin hold the top 4 slots in the latest Which? tests. Top spot went to the 2699 which is the same as the 2599 but an inch bigger.

I've used Basecamp for years and do all my trip planning on it, both walking and driving. It works well with all the current crop of nuvis.
