A local who is tired of motorists speeding through the village of Knockin, north-west Shropshire has erected a fake speed camera.
He has positioned a cardboard box, painted yellow, on a post outside his house on the B4396.
He has defended the action saying: "It's certainly done the trick and slowed them down. The camera will stay as long as it takes to slow people down and get them used to the fact we don't want them speeding through our village."
He claims that most of his fellow villagers think that it's a good idea, but Warwickshire and West Mercia Safer Roads Partnership don't agree, saying that they do not endorse fake cameras. They encourage local communities to raise any speeding concerns with their local parish councils or safer neighbourhood teams.
They said "All of our speed enforcement sites are carefully assessed against strict national Department for Transport criteria around suitability, traffic management and health and safety before being implemented."
As with a similar story earlier this month , Sat-Nav Redirects Prompts Man To Erect Fake Speed Camera, it is assumed that there is no sign to warn of the impending device. This may mean that if motorists suddenly slam on their brakes to avoid "detection", the fake camera might actually render the road more prone to accidents .
I wonder would this man, who preferred not to give his full name, be seen as the responsible party if such an accident occurred as a result of his action?

Hi All..
regardless of wether people should take matters into their own hands, if a motorist slams on his brakes and someone hits him there are 2 people at fault.. the idiot going so fast he needs to brake so hard.. and the other idiot doing same speed and following too close!!
personal view and not to be taken as antagonistic ..

I read this story in the Shropshire Star yesterday while visiting Telford, and the local council have said it can stay in place according to the paper.
Whatever next? People in fake Police uniforms stopping motorists?
I wouldn't care, but Knockin is a one horse village.
