50% Of Drivers Fined At Under 70mph On M1 Stretch

Since their introduction in September 2013, average speed cameras on the M1 have caught approximately 20,000 speeding drivers. They have raised £1.7 million in fines.

The "smart motorway" speed cameras are sited between Junctions 10 and 13 and are designed to catch speeders either at the national speed limit of 70mph or when circumstances dictate that the speed limit should be lowered.

Nearly half of those fined were driving slower than the 70mph. It is thought that many are ignorant of how these cameras work.

The system, which not only includes variable speed cameras, but hundreds of electronic signs and signals, also allows the hard shoulder to be used as a an extra lane, when signs indicate.

Simon Hawkins, the Chief Superintendent of Hertfordshire Constabulary commented: "Speeding is one of the main 'fatal four' factors leading to serious road collisions and fatalities, along with drink-driving, failing to wear a seatbelt and using a mobile phone at the wheel."

He added: "The speed cameras on this stretch of the M1 operate when there are variable speed limits. The cameras work automatically one minute after the speed limit is changed. Once changed, the sign becomes a legal limit and it is our duty to enforce these."
