Following on from our story yesterday about the introduction of average speed cameras on the A12 in Essex, more permanent cameras are due to be installed on the A12, this time in Suffolk.

The Highways Agency stress that safety is their top priority and they hope to reduce the number of accidents. They also hope to keep the A12's traffic flowing more efficiently.

The average speed cameras will cover a stretch of road between Stratford St Mary and East Bergholt which lies between Colchester and Ipswich.

Installation work is planned to coincide with resurfacing work along the A12 and will take place over four weeks between the hours of 8pm and 6am.

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said: "The A12 is a vital route and enforcing the speed limit is part of our commitment to keeping journeys on it safe and reliable for the thousands of drivers who depend on it every day."

Installation work starts tomorrow.

Part of the Suffolk length is notorious. numerous accidents caused by very short slip roads on a fairly sharply curved and twisting 70mph trunk road. Drivers staying in the inside lane on the approach to these junctions when the outside lane is empty instead of being considerate and moving out. There were plans 30 years ago to straighten the worst section but because East Anglia is regarded as a backwater in transport terms by ALL governments and Suffolk County Council has no idea how to run roads except reducing speed limits, this was never progressed. It would have been a small project compared to most schemes but it is far better to spend a fortune on Specs when most of us dream of being able to attain 70 on this stretch.

I'm not allowed to use that sort of language on here. Embarassed

If the current roadwork cameras make enough 'income', it's feasible that they will stay and reproduce. Shocked
