Darren Griffen bemoans the lack of congestion charge boundary markers on satnavs in this weeks newsletter but what really ruins my route planning is that there is no indication of where the tolls start and end on the French and Spanish autoroute/autovia.
When we tour Europe on motorcycle we do use a lot of preplanned routes and it's a PITA not being able to use or not use various toll roads.
Surely it can't be that hard to mark toll booths? |

Not sure which satnav you use but on Garmins you can set to avoid toll roads. I use it whenever I'm in France.
You can do the same on Garmins Basecamp route planning program, so by comparing routes with avoid tolls selected and not selected it will show you where the toll sections are, you can then adjust routes accordingly.

| Ok, so it will route around tolls, but does it show them so that you can work out why it has taken the route that it has? |

That's why I suggested planning them in Basecamp. Creating two routes, one avoiding tolls and the other not, you can see where the toll sections are and make decisions as to whether to use the toll road or not.
Basecamp will give you distances/timings as well which helps (me anyway) to decide whether it's worth paying a toll or not.

It is a Garmin, a Zumo 390, and yes you can avoid tolls.
We use Basecamp all the time and using it to show with and without tolls gives totally different routes. It will not just drop you off the autoroute and return you after the toll section ends as it will take into account any toll section with the whole route and route you accordingly.
The other point is that some toll sections are worth using. We always use the section of the A16 Eurotunnel to Rouen instead of going through Boulogne and the A63 Bordeaux to the Spanish border instead of the nightmare that is Biarritz. This is all knowledge from years of driving and riding through France to Spain. It's the routes that we don't know where things like toll sections would be so useful. |

This is what the thread is about. An on screen (on the satnav) visible indication of the congestion charge entry points and a visible indication of the position of toll booths.
Having said that, your methods do seem reasonable, if you have the time for the pre-work, have Basecamp and have a Garmin. |

Well Basecamp will IF that would then be the route that best matches the profile you have set (eg fastest route). That's not always the case though which is why you may see what you feel are 'totally different routes'.

While I can see the sense of having congestion charge entry points shown, as you can presumably turn to avoid them, knowing that a toll both is coming up doesn't really help, unless you fancy u-turning on a autoroute etc

As I stated in my OP. It's the planning of routes where the position of tolls would be helpful, not as an onscreen prompt as every Peage entry has an exit to a route nationale (legal requirement in France) prior to the booths unlike Switzerland where they trap you for a vignette.
[OT] As motorcyclists we do seem to plan routes rather more than "Cagers" who seem to just go from A to B. We are more interested in the "ride" than the journey. |

Yep, I understand that. Used to ride on 2 wheels myself
My trick with Basecamp should at least help though, it's certainly worked for me in the past. I also have (for my French trips) a copy of the AA Big Road Atlas ... that shows the peage sections in a different colour.
May be worth making the suggestion here http://www8.garmin.com/contactUs/ideas/ about showing toll booths.

In the PgpsW download section there is a POI file of toll booth locations. I know from experience that they include nearly all the ones in France and Spain. If your SatNAv can accept 3rd party POIs, they may be worth a try.
Have you tried the ViaMichelin website for route planning on a motorbike, using good routes and avoiding tolls? I use it most times I bike between Blighty and Spain. I find it pretty good.
