The controversial A9 average speed cameras are due to be activated on the morning of 28th October, but Liberal Democrat minister and Highland MP Danny Alexander has asked the Scottish transport minister Keith Brown to have a last minute rethink before switching them back on.

Alexander has always opposed the initiative. He believes that the cameras will lead to driver frustration, in turn leading to more accidents.

He argues that an effective alternative to the average speed cameras would be police operated mobile cameras at accident black spots alongside better road signage.

Alexander commented: "With just days until the cameras become operational, time is running out for Keith Brown to prove he cares what Highlanders think. He has been described as someone who will listen as he makes his plea to become SNP deputy. But there has so far been no evidence that he is prepared to listen to thousands of Highlanders who do not want his yellow vultures on the A9."

He added "Keith Brown should take this weekend to reflect and, instead of turning on the cameras, break the habit of a lifetime by listening to the wishes of Highlanders."

I think Danny's on a hiding to nothing.. They are not going to invest all that money on a revenue making (sorry, road safety) project and then not use it, are they?
