Ten speed cameras are to be retired in New South Wales (NSW), Australia.

NSW roads minister Duncan Gay said that those particular ten cameras do not provide a "road safety benefit".

Twenty four speed cameras have already been decommissioned since the present government came to power in 2011, but more than 100 fixed speed cameras will still be in operation.

The first of the cameras, which are around Sydney and Central Coast area, will be removed within the next few weeks.

Australia's National Roads and Motorists' Association (NRMA) initially lobbied the Government about the usefulness of speed cameras in the run up to the 2011 election.

They called on them to carry out a yearly evaluation of the effectiveness of individual speed cameras with the intention to divert revenue raised from the cameras back into road safety.

The NRMA president commented "The community will support the use of fixed speed cameras and speed and red light cameras if they think they are located in areas that are dangerous. We don’t want our Members getting booked — but if they do — the fact that all revenue will go back into road safety measures through the Community Road Safety Fund adds further weight to the argument that the enforcement system in NSW isn't about revenue raising, but about saving lives."
