A single "speed camera" is being shared by three separate Leicestershire villages under a new initiative to encourage drivers to slow down.

Though it is not really a speed camera in the true sense of the word, the unit flashes up the vehicle's speed and records its speed anonymously. It does not ticket or fine motorists.

The equipment, and the data derived from it, will be shared by the villages of Peatling Parva, Dunton Bassett and Ashby Magna.

A permanent mounting post is in pace in all three locations and the data will be forwarded to Leicestershire County Council with the intention of helping future traffic decisions in the area. It will be interesting to see if real speed cameras will eventually be used in the area as a result.

It was set up with the help of a local business who contributed £1,600, a third of the cost. Following a suggestion to them by a local resident, Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground (a vehicle testing and development facility), thought it was a good idea and donated the money.

They commented "We are so impressed by the potential traffic-calming effect of these cameras that we are considering installing a couple on our own internal road network."

Local resident Ray Perkins, who initially suggested using the equipment, added "Many drivers don't realise how fast they are travelling. Having their speed flashed up will be a reminder they are going through a village with a 30mph limit."

Makes you wonder if these apparently daydreaming drivers should be driving at all? Shocked

Oh, don't be silly. You mean that you NEVER miss a speed limit sign and ALWAYS slow down to 30 or less in a 30 zone. Supreme Angel
I don't believe you. Very Happy

No, Yes and I always drive at exactly 1 mph below the posted speed limit - how could you even doubt that Laughing

If most drivers ignore the speed limit AND there is no history of accidents. Then I would suggest that the limit is wrong.

We have a 30mph one that gets triggered at about 25mph. So to me it's telling people that speed cameras are inaccurate...

I don't really see how anyone can disagree with sgould's comment, IF both parts are shown to be true.

Surely there has to be a logical reason for any speed limit?

If there are NO problems caused by a large number of people going faster than the imposed limit, then the limit has been enforced for no good reason.

And that smacks of someone just THINKING they know what's best for others; that's never a good reason for banning something.
