Everytime someone mentions incorrect postcodes, specifically those that have changed several years ago not being correct in TT3, someone else just says, "blame it on TeleAtlas and report it to them". I believe that this is not right because I firmly beleive that TT3 has purchased out of date data.

Take a look at http://www.uk.map24.com/ and enter one of the "new" postcodes and you will find that it has them. Then after your search, look at the bottom right corner and you will see, (c)2004 TeleAtlas. Surprise surprise, Teleatlas know there are new postcodes but TT3 does not. So who is really at fault here Question This has nothing at all to do with the map data itself and getting postcodes correct DOES NOT require a new survey.

As with the open letter about missing town names, I think we need another open letter for the postcode issue. After enough people sent that letter, TT released 3.03 and 3.04T which corrected the problem.

It really is not good enough for people to say we should all use the add-on programs for postcodes. How is it that a third party, non-profit program, written by someone outside this industry could get it right? First time?

Hi

The mapdata used on Map24 is not as up to date as the data in TT3

I live in a road that until TT3 did no have map data but now in TT3 my road now is included.

In map24 my road does not appear , Many mapping companies use a stand alone postcode data base and pass a Long Lat position to the map system

Normally mapdata does not include postcode information and its down to the software developers to include some sort of data base with long lat

Tomtom has done this but the data will not be the latest. Remember the UK is strange were postcodes are concerned most countries use a 5 field numeric post code making it far simplier to create and lookup

Best regards

Fergy

As with the open letter about missing town names, I think we need another open letter for the postcode issue. After enough people sent that letter, TT released 3.03 and 3.04T which corrected the problem.

The two issues are, I believe, different. Navigator 3 3.03 / 3.04T, which fix the address lookup problems, also fixes some missing places.

I'm not clear whether the missing places were there all along, and there was a program bug preventing the data from being accessed, or whether 3.03 / 3.04T patches the map files. It appears that the missing towns were there in the TeleAtlas data that TomTom started with - they just weren't showing for some reason.

However, incorrect postcodes is more a case of the data being out of date. I'm 99% certain that the postcode data built in to the Navigator 3 maps has come from TeleAtlas - as each street name has a postcode attached.

It's perfectly possible for any program using TeleAtlas data to get better postcode lookup if a database of postcode versus co-ordinates is used in addition to the TeleAtlas data. This is the approach taken by Niels' add-on program and, I suspect, the web site you mentioned. That doesn't mean, though, that postcode errors in the underlying TeleAtlas data have been fixed.

All mapping data is somewhat out of date when you get it - that's life, I'm afraid. It's likely that the postcodes that are wrong were out of date in the TeleAtlas data that TomTom started with - which means that you have to wait for the next map release for a fix, likely with Navigator 4.

Your best bet is to report the problematic areas to TeleAtlas, in the hope that they can update the postcode details in their data before TomTom purchase the data that they'll use for Navigator 4. The more reports TeleAtlas get, the more likely they are to look at this and sort it.

I can't see this issue being fixed in the lifetime of Navigator 3, just as I can't see M6 Toll being added - so far as I can tell, correct postcodes simply weren't in the data that TomTom based Navigator 3 on. This is a different scenario to the missing towns - which were in the data but weren't showing.
