A motorist has been caught driving with hands behind his head for over 30 seconds.

Car mechanic Richard Newton, 36, was travelling with both of his hands behind his head at 62mph along a stretch of the A171 with a 60mph limit near the North York Moors.

He was caught on video camera by an officer in a safety camera van.

His excuse was that he had a twinge in his back and was stretching. Newton accepted the charge of careless driving at Scarborough magistrates but denied a charge of dangerous driving.

He was found guilty of dangerous driving and banned from driving for a year alongside 100 hours community service and a fine of £625 with a £60 surcharge.

The head of North Yorkshire Police's Mobile Safety Camera Team, commented, "This case demonstrates two things; one is the sheer stupidity of some people who put others in danger, and the other is the ability of our safety camera to capture a range of offences."

He added, "This is yet another case which shows that these cameras are about safety and not just speeding. We will take action against all manner of offences to ensure we keep our roads as safe as possible for everyone."

During the hearing, the prosecution asked him which part of the human body he thought the steering wheel was designed for. Gotcha!

I think the whole prosecution was ridiculous. If you are driving along a straight road in a car that has self-centring steering by design, you don't need hands.

Overreaction by the safety partnership, police, CPS, etc etc. Followed by a bunch of magistrates who are probably friends of senior policemen and don't want to upset them.

Guilty until proven innocent.....

Could you please let us all know when you're out and about on the roads, for our own safety.

Quite correct. Because when you are driving and something happens in front of you where you'd need to make a sudden steering adjustment the best place for your hands to be is behind your head.

Again quite right. They should have waited for him to have killed someone before prosecuting him.

Presumably had you been coming the other way and his car had hit a pot hole and swerved into your path causing you to crash and be injured you would still believe he was driving safely at the time?

I think the sentence was too harsh.
