I know that you are planning on using a power source as the trigger but it is possible that unless you have your phone connected to a permanent supply, your phone battery could die out unless you use your car for a significant ammount of time every day and if't connected to a permanent supply, its possible that it is not going to recognise a new power source. do you have a radio with Bluetooth?

If you are able to find Tasker (or similar) on iOS, this is the way I have cobbled together my system -

Everything is triggered by a Bluetooth connection to my car radio-
I enable Bluetooth on on my phone.
I turn the car ignition on, the Bluetooth on my radio is enabled. From here everything is automatic-

the phone pairs to the radio over BT
The BT pairing triggers GPS to switch on
Wait 3 minutes (to get a GPS fix)
Start CAmerAlert app.
Wait 5 seconds
Beep (To draw my attention that CA has started and to make sure it is tracking, if not, I have 1 minute to manually set it to track before the next operation)
Wait 1 minute
Start Navigation app (Which at the moment is Waze).

Switching the car off, kills the BT to the radio and the pairing. Tasker recognises the lost BT pairing and shuts everything down.

So, all I have to remember to do is turn the BT on my phone on.

I'm on Android but using "Bluetooth Auto Connect" which switches BT on when put on charge so, ignition on, USB charger receives 12v, BT switches on - I think I'll try Tasker for the rest of the sequence.

There is a free 7 day trial link on tasker's website. Make sure it does what you want prior to purchase. It works with one of my phones but not the other.

Thanks, I'll have a look & a play - I've read a few reports of battery drain problems with Tasker, have you experienced this?

How about an automatic power after a predetermined amount of time that the speed signal has been 0mph as an interim solution?

Is that a selectable feature because I don't know how to select it if so.

No, it's just part of it. Not selectable. Problem is that after a comfort break of more than about 10 mins, you must remember to reactivate CA especially if you run it in the background, because it switches itself off without your say so. personally, I would rather have fast battery consumption than the possibility of a speeding ticket because I had forgotten that it switches itself off.

If it switches itself off, why is my battery still going flat and taking an age to recharge the next day when I drive the car.

Seems odd.

What is it that switches off? is it just the GPS antenna? if so, why not emit an audible warning tone every minute (user configurable) to warn that the gps sensing has been switched off?

Is it possible for the app to re-access the gps signal when the phone is outputting music. That would work as it would know you are in the car again and driving if you are playing music again.

As an Android user I can't say for sure how it works on iPhone but, for Android, it is the CamerAlert app which shuts down leaving the GPS running. I think that there is something in the Android rules which prevents apps from opening/closing WiFi/data/Gps/Bt/etc. automatically to prevent privacy breaches. Perhaps iPhone is the same?

But if you were in your house playing music, how would it know that and thus not to switch it back on?

That's a valid point but in my case, I have two dedicated old iphones that I keep in the car just for the purposes of providing music and running cameralert (dedication for you).

If you are the taking the unit in and out of the car with you each time you use cameralert, then you don't need to worry about it automatically switching on or off.

I'm trying to find a way to ensure that cameralert is always working whenever I am in the car, or my wife is in her car.

I'm less concerned about me as I know the limitations and what I need to do but the wife could do with being reminded about mobile camera locations which have now caught her twice, this time no awareness course!

Ideally the auto turn on or off whenever the device is on charge would work well. That would give it the functionality of a stand alone device that it is currently lacking.

The music suggestion is just a work around if there's no way to detect the charging status of the phone.

It might for you but I charge my phone more frequently than I use CA, so I certainly would not want CA to start every time I put my phone on charge
