Hello All

First time I have been in the Garmin bit of the forum..

10+ years as a TomTom user, finally go so hacked off with them after trying to use that POS they call a NAV4 GO500 for the last month. Well its gone in the Bin., and I have bought myself a Garmin 2598LMTD

All a bit odd compared to the TomTom, but on the plus side the Navigate to Postcodes work and I have not had to throw it out the winsow yet.

So will np doubt be asking some basic questions as I get my head around this change of brand/system

Any tips you can throuw my way on making life with Garmin easier would be appreciated.

Cheers

Welcome back from the dark side Laughing

Make a full back up of your GPS ... you never know when you might need it. Note there are some tricks to doing that. First, you need to switch your GPS from MTP to mass storage mode. To do that:

1. Start NUVI by itself and go to Volume Screen.
2. Press the upper right hand corner of screen for 10 seconds.
3. The Developers Screen will pop up
4. Scroll down to MTP SETTINGS
5. Change from AUTO DETECT to MASS STORAGE
6. Shut down NUVI and connect to PC
7. It should now connect in mass storage mode.

As an alternative to step 1 above, you can bring up the Nuvi's "dashboard" screen, then press and hold the speedometer for about 10 seconds to access the developer screen.

Then you need to set Windows to show hidden and system files:

Now you should see the hidden .system folder, this is the one that contains maps etc.

Copy all the folders from your GPS onto your PC. Back up done!

Excellent Help and detailed so even I can understand Laughing

Having been for TT for a while I had forgotten that you can actually make a proper local backup,

Using Mac as my main machine but will connect it to my Server which is running Windows and get a backup done

Much Aprreciated

Solid advice Very Happy

After all, these things are just mini computers so a full file backup from the start is the way to go.

I'm in the same position as the OP - just bought a garmin 52 after years of TomTom.

Regarding the backup steps :

1. Do you need to reverse steps 2 to 5? I.e Change Mass Storage to Auto Detect.

6. Don't you need to switch the device on again once connected?

on my 3598 there is an option 'mass storage one time only'.
I select that option. Now plug in the usb lead & the screen changes showing a picture of the sat-nav in white

Next time you connect, the device will be back in its normal mode, allowing Garmin Explorer or POI loader to work. In this mode the picture is orange.

I have found that in mass storage mode it is so slow, taking ages for the computer to display all of the files, this is using windows 7 & explorer (not IE)

maybe some bright spark has found a way to speed this up.

If you have a 52 I don't believe it uses MTP? But;

1. No.
2. No.

It,s possible , there's no mention in the manual. It tells you how to move files from PC to device (drag and drop), but not vice
versa

Will you two stop using the quote button and use the reply button instead. It is pointless (and takes up unnecessary space0 to quote all of the preceding post unless it is to make a point and makes the thread more difficult to read. Burn In Hell Very Happy

I agree, but then I didn't quote the preceeding post Rolling Eyes

I was though in a hurry, and if I'd replied in a different order I could have had only one quote instead of two Wink

I'm not sure though that you're right to insinuate that you can do so if 'it is to make a point and makes the thread more difficult to read' ... think there's some punctuation missing somewhere Laughing

About the only place someone might incorrectly put a comma is between the "point" and the "and.' Very Happy However, I will give you that it could have been worded slightly better and there is an errant 'O' in there somewhere. But the subject of my sentence was the use of quotes Sad
Not only that, my dad is bigger than your dad. Twisted Evil

Actually, I expected only the last three lines to be quoted. By the time I realised that it was all there, it was too late to rectify (I was on an iPad, and I just can't use the highlighter).

I was on the iPad because I didn't know whether I could use a browser while doing the update. My apologies.

Personally, I'd have said ".........unless it is to make a point. It also makes the thread more difficult to read."

Anyway, I've only just found the "post reply" button. Smile
