I have been looking at the Brodit site for their mounting clips and device holders. I appreciate that I need both, but how the heck do the device holders fix onto the mounting clips? For the life of me I can't see how from their pictures.

You fit the car specific part as per the instructions.

As for the device mount I've had the TomTom x40 and the iPhone 4/4S mounts and both these attach with 4 x self tapping screws. Perhaps make a dent with a bradle first but it a little elbow grease and a 3 minutes job - if that...

Sometimes you need to loosen and swing the mount to the extremes of adjustability to get the screws in but it'll make sense when you see it.

Which device mount are you looking for?

There's an example of installation here but I didn't have to take either of mind apart in the manner shown

Ah, I see. Thanks for that. I have a couple of home made 'slide in' active mounts for my phone and satnav, but fixing them sensibly in the car has been the problem and the Brodit clip things seem to be the tidy answer as I will probably be able to screw my mounts to the clippy things OK. I am getting a new motor so don't want to go drilling holes in the dash and the Brodit clips for my car seem to be just the job. I'll post the results when I have had a go at it. Just a case of deciding which clips I need to go where in the car. I have seen the alternatives and might get two, one for each device.

Also, have a look at the "move clips". They attach to the proclip and the mount with double-sided foam pads that will NOT come off easily. They then slide into each other.

In your case, you could have one proclip for the car and separate mounts for the devices. You can then swap them over easily.

Looking at the site, there appears to be a newer version than the 213005 I have but just ensure whichever you get includes both parts (normally two of the device mounts are included for exactly your needs).

Been using them for years and would personally recommend their mounts.

I use the Move clips as I frequently change devices. Screwing a plate in place would be too much hassle to change them around. I also have a wide plate with a few move clips on so I can have 2 devices next to each other on a single mount.
