I want to keep using my Garmin GPS for route directing. However, having just done a 1,700 mile drive with one in America I realise how much one is missing with not having a map in the car.

The map shows you what is a few miles off the planned route and helps make decisions about when to take a break and stretch one's legs for a while.

It is not all that practical to zoom out the Garmin and it would be far easier to have a small tablet that my wife can look at from time to time.

I have a Samsung 7" tablet that has a GPS receiver. Can someone suggest a good UK mapping system that I can buy and upload? I'd love to have it full of Ordnance Survey maps but I get the feel that it would cost about £200 to cover the whole UK.

All ideas welcome.

Doesn't Google Maps fit the bill? It's comprehensive, easy to use, totally free and probably more up to date than most "paid for" offerings - if one downloads the tiles one needs in advance for offline use one is totally sorted Very Happy

Ian,

I looked at Google maps but it cannot handle a two hour journey.

I have just called up a map from SW6 to Chichester. A trip we do quite often and love stopping at a pub with some good nearby walks. It will show the map but as soon as you zoom it the definition becomes useless.

It would have been useless on our two hundred mile journeys in the US.

Any other suggestions?

I may have to take back what I have just said.

The App said done and I turned off my WiFi to see what was there. Much was fuzzy.

I have turned on the WiFi again and I think it has found more info.

I will look into it again after lunch.

If you go into settings you can "Make Available Offline" - You can then define up to about 10 Tiles (I think) of about 50 x 50 miles each - set them along your route & you could potentially have a corridor 400 - 500 miles long x 50 miles wide. Alternatively, if you centre them only on the areas you're interested in, you could potentially have a weeks travelling with all the information available on Google Maps stored offline - Just a thought!

I swear by an Android app called OsmAnd+, it's available for free but for a few pounds extra it provides additional useful features. Based on OSM maps it is "community" based so it is only as good as the latest update but I find it as good as any OS map.

OsmAnd+ looks interesting.

Will give it a try.

Struggling to get it to plan a route at the mo' but Google will probably explain how.

Granny sucking eggs comes to mind but do make sure you have a GPS lock before you try to plan a route. If not you can import a .csv file to follow from any of the multitude of on-line route planners.

Depends upon where you are and what you know about where you want to go.

If you start OsmAnd you are greeted with the Main menu with four options -

1) If you know the location of where you want to go choose "Map" and scroll to the destination. "Tap" the map at the required location which brings up a dialogue box, "Tap" within this box yields a sub-menu, select "Destination". You are good to go.

2) If you know only the name or address select "Search" from the main menu. You are then taken to various categories. Unless I am searching for a specific item/category nearby I always tap the "Home" icon/tab and enter the full address.

I think that this is an under-rated app that is definitely worth persevering with. Let us know if you need more assistance.

Thanks.

I am getting the hang of the routing. It seems much more effective if one is online and use the 'internet' option. My guess is that the offline database is not all that complete.

No great problem though. If I needed to mark a destination most times I could do when on the internet by WiFi at home or in a hotel.

My Samsung 7.7 has no sim connection but I could use my S2 phone as a WiFi hotspot if I was in an emergency and offline.

Sorry, my bad, I had assumed that you had a data connection. Sad I believe that the database is on-board once you have downloaded the maps and POI's, but online routing is definitely better than offline routing.

Gmt_plus1

I am getting to like OsmAnd+

Have you worked out how to download the hillshading overlays?

It is also worth pointing out that the non "+" version is not being developed so it is several versions behind the "+" one. I say that for others who pick up this thread and are reluctant to cough up their fiver!

I downloaded the hillshade plugin a while ago along with the parking plugin, I've used the parking facility but not tried the hillshade. I'll take the dog for a walk later (today or tomorrow or sometime) and give it a try. TBH, Hillshading is not near the top of my wish list so if it doesn't work straight off, I may not persevere with it, but I shall report back yay or nay.

Thanks.

I like that Touring View with Hillshades as a way of getting a better feel of the terraine one is driving through.

As on here:-

AliOnHols

I had just got to grips with OsmAnd + on my Samsung 7.7 and then had to do a factory reset.

Now I can't reload it. The message says it is not compatible with the tablet.

I have emailed the originator. In the meantime, have you any clues what might have happened?

EDIT. Found the APK and downloaded it.
