Could you please tell me the most accurate way to pinpoint a speed camera.

I live in Mauritius and the Government have started to install speed cameras all over the island.

When I get the compas bearing for the camera from TomTom and then enter it into the database on line the camera is not shown where it should be on the map.

I am sure it is something I am doing but as, I am led to believe, so 50 plus speed cameras have been sold to the government by some slick salesmen I have a lot of work to do and need to do it right.

Thank you in anticipation

Hi Rich. I assume that you are talking about the PGPSW cameras not the TT ones?

How you record the location on the fly will depend on the device that you have.
If you can recognise the position of the cam on a map, do the following:-Click on the big yellow pointy finger to the right of your post. Then pan around the map and zoom in to Mauritius. Find the rough location of the cam on the map and then zoom in more. Position the little cross that appears under the blue pointer when it is moved to the location of the camera. Place the cross in the centre of the map road, not the satellite view, although using satellite view can help locate the position, but put the am on the road on map view. The actual Lat/lon co-ordinates of the cross are show just above the top right hand corner of the map.
As I'm sure we don't have a verifier in Mauritius, a photo of the cam with a bit of the surrounding countryside will help. Unfortunately Streetview hasn't yet been there

I'm not sure if you are going wrong getting the camera position right in the first place, or when you are trying to report it on the submission map.

But I wrote a tutorial on how to 1) log the camera positions when you see one out on the road, and 2) how to report them back to the PGPSW team.

Have a read of this and then ask any questions back here.

How to capture new Speed Cams on a TomTom and REPORT them

(As you can see, I didn't get round to doing a version for the new models (where the menu layout has changed so the actual button taps needed are different) but the principle is the same, so if you are reasonably aware of how to add Favourites, you should be able to work out the minor differences)

The submission map needs them to be in 'Decimal degrees'. TomTom, by default, use 'Degrees, Minutes, Seconds' format so they need converting.

I'm actually in the process of making a web form for the site where you can enter the DMS coordinates and it will convert it to Decimal degrees for use in our maps.

How many do you have? If there are just a few I can convert them for you if you post them here. If there are hundreds then it might be quicker for me to create an Excel formula to to do them en-masse.

As I describe in the tutorial above, it's very easy to switch the TomTom over to degrees and decimal degrees (d.d°)

In fact I think that might be the default setting these days....

Thanks MaFt, Is there a shortcut to it somewhere on the Home Page / Menus or do we need to book mark it?
