Hi chaps, I have recently bought a garmin nuvi 2545lmt. First thing I did was to give a read to the instructions, then I tried out the device, and noticed a couple of
"problems": (I have condensed everything in a post, but tell me if you want me to break them in separate posts)
the instructions briefly touch on these but the solutions (when given) don't seem to work. I will use as sample data these two postcodes in UK: going from KT25AG to
WD173NL (although these a UK based postcode it doestn' matter because I believe these concepts will apply to any country so feel feel to chip in if you don't type from UK).
My current settings are these:
-Advanced detours activate
-avoidances: u-turns, tolls and fees, traffic, car-shares Lanes, unpaved roads
-calculation mode: faster time
Ok so here they are:
1)the sat nav has 2 routes (which is rubbish anyway because there are definitely more than only 2) but anyway
let's call them A and B. Let's focus on route A: it is not always the same, sometimes route A goes through London and in other occasions it goes throught the m25.
I checked it a few times in the space of 10 minutes and it changes a few times and it is not a glitch as I thought, why does this happen?

2) I would like to be able to choose a route and then customize it. Again lets take another example based on the postcodes above.
The sat nav told me at some point I have to take the m25 (which is what I wanted) but from Heathrow ( so joining from the M4) whereas I want to join the m25
from the M3. SO essentially I am saying I want to customize the route chosen by the sat nav. Now I have tried with the detours but no joy, (although it is not very clear how they work)
and by clicking on the screen so select what I think is called a viewpoint and add it to the map but it doesn't work because then the viewpoint seems to become the new destination
replacing my original one. SO any advice as to how to do that? The idea is that given a route chosen by the sat nav I can make my own changes and get it to follow the new route

3)if I go a different way from he one the sat nav has chosen, it keeps saying I have to go back and follow its route: this was particularly true with the above postcodes: I went a different
way and it kept telling me to go back - no kidding - till I got more than halfway to my destination: this is just insane!? I would have thought the sat nav will, to an
extent, adapt to my new route

4)view map rather than zooming out: so say I select a destination how do I view the whole route? I have a destination in memory, select "Routes" and the device
shows me the available ones: how do I view the whole route rather than zooming out all the way?

5)Demonstration: when I select the GPS simulator is there anything like fast -forwarding rather than sitting there for hours watching it demoing the whole thing at
the slowest speed ever?

thanks in advance for this

1. Hardly rubbish, your satnav can't show you every conceivable route Wink However the rerouting could be due to various things, but as you have traffic avoidances enabled that's the most likely cause. If you don't want it, turn it off. Also having traffic trends enabled can give unexpected results, many users turn traffic trends off.

2. See page 23 of the manual (which also explains detours).

3. Your satnav (quite rightly) assumes you want to go to any point you've inserted in your route/trip. If you don't it will direct you back to it. To skip a via point select your route/trip and tell it to go to the point after the one you want to skip.

4. See page 28 of the manual.

5. Nope.

I suggest you just play with your satnav a bit while looking at the manual, it's not something you can simply pick up and play with Smile

Hi thanks. I have disabled the traffic avoidances do you reckon I should disable the u-turns, the car-share lines etc?

2)I did read page 23 before posting. It doesn't really elaborate much on the detours, it just says "Taking a Detour While navigating an automobile route, you can
use detours to avoid obstacles ahead of you, such as construction zones. NOTE: If the route you are currently navigating is the only reasonable option, your device might
not calculate a detour. From the map, select --- Detour (I can't replicate the sign sorry)". That's it. SO I don't know how to use it. This is what I have done:
I started to navigate the route, then clicked on Detour and it recalculated the route, obviously it didn't pick up the one I wanted. So I tried to use the advanced detour: restarted the normal route, clicke on detour and I have a list of roads. If I pick up any it recalculates the route but again it doestn' give me what I want,
which just to remind you is to get onto the m25 at junction 9 as opposed to junction 15. One thing I reckon it's worth mentioning is that on the sat nav I have the magenta route which is the one that it follows but then I also have a few blue dotted lines which to me look like other routes but for the life of me i can't select them in any way. One of these blue dotted lines is actually the route I have in mind.

3)Fair enough about the sat nav redirecting to the destination I have chosen. Problem is I can't skip a point because there is only one point which is my destination: so the situation is: get from A to B but I chose a route different from the one the sat nav has chosen for me, so I expect it to pick up the new route and guide me to the destination rather than telling me to go all the way back to the original route it has chosen even if I am half way to the destination.

4) Yes I read page 28 before posting. Now, this is a really funny one. The guide on page 28 says: "Viewing the Entire Route on the Map
a)While navigating an automobile route, select the navigation bar at the top of the map.
b) Select --- Map (again can't replicate the sign)."
Unfortunately when I click the button indicated in the guide to get the full map, I don't have a "map" option but instead a plethora of options:"Traffic", "mute" , "Stop", "Detour", "Exit services" etc.

5)fair enough, although it seems very strange that if I want to demo a very long trip I have to sit in front of the sat nav for hours...

Also I'd like to add a few things I have noticed. My location is set to Kingston upon Thames where I live. Say I want to go to Canterbury: I go to Where TO --- Address --- Spell Town and enter Canterbury. But then I have to enter a house number - which luckily is not mandatory so I skip it - and a street: the thing is I don't know any street, I just want to go to Canterbury, but if I don't enter any street the sat nav forces me to choose one giving me a list of all the streets in Canterbury...is this normal? I mean I just want to go to canterbury, can't it just get me there without me specifying a street?
thanks

1. Up to you about u turns etc

2. Using the detour won't always give you what you want, just an alternative route. Personally it's not a function I use. The blue dotted lines are the trip log (see page 26 of the manual). They show where you've been. You can set them to be either on or off. I don't find them useful so always have mine off.

3. The only reason it would continue to try to get you back to A is if you'd specified that as a point on your route.

4. Is there a down arrow showing, if so select it as Show map may be down the list.

5. To go to a city Where to, Cities, no need for an address. You may need to use the down arrow to reveal the Cities entry.

Sorry, I don't know the 2545 but I have met exactly your problems on earlier models. First Route inconsistency. That is almost certainly due to very minor differences in traffic. A satnav chooses between routes based on your preferences. If you choose faster time then if route B is half a second faster than A it will choose B. What often bugs me is that when I know better and go off route the resulting re-calculation can often result in an earler predicted arrival! So "faster time" may not be! Also I am often caught by my 760 trying to put me back to iits route until it finally accept s mine (with a sigh of resignation? ) Only use detour as a last resort. In your example input M25 J11 as a via point
