I have already posted this question on the beginners forum but thought I may have a better response from the Fugawi forum since you are the people using the software.

First of all I am running a Palm Tungsten T3 with TT5 but need some OS based mapping ability for off road use.

My decision may come down to Fugawi UK or Fugawi GPS mapping software. I am currently edging towards the latter as I currently already own maps of all the areas that I am likely to be visiting and could scan them in. What are the pros and cons of these two? Your help/guidance would be appreciated.

Rob.

Hi Rob,

Your problem is the Palm, because I don't know of any other map programs that run on Palms. I've almost abandoned Fugawi on my PPC because Memory Map is far superior (except that their files are about 50% larger for a given area).

It depends on what map scales you're interested in, the total area, and how much patience you have. Fugawi2 (UK) comes with the equivalent of about 50 "Landranger" (1:50k) maps, and I think is actually cheaper than Fugawi3.

You can't calibrate maps on Fugawi2 and the maximum individual file size you can transfer to the PDA is 1600 sq kms (same as most Landranger maps), but that's still the equivalent of scanning about 12 A4 pages (which is also technically illegal). However, "Explorer" (1:25k) electronic mapping is apallingly expensive, so if you only want quite small areas then scanning for Fugawi3 might be a better choice.

How old are your maps? The Fugawi2 mapping shouldn't be more than a few years old, and also includes height data (although I'm not sure if the PDA can use it).

Cheers, Alan.

Thanks Alan

This is pretty much what I was thinking but it's nice to hear it from someone else.
I don't really need the whole of the UK which works out at around £150 on Fugawi2 (uk) neither am I too worried about altitude so scanning my own maps for the specific areas I want to visit seems like the way to go. I could probably use it abroad too if I can get maps.

My maps are pretty new (<12 months), since I use them for driving rights of way they need to be so I am within the law. I need Fugawi to make sure I follow the correct routes if the map markings are not too clear.

Do the two systems have similar interfaces or does one have better functionality/features to the other? - I think I may be just being picky now though.

Rob.

Hi Rob,

I wouldn't recommend that anybody buys the whole-UK Fugawi "straight-off", because you can buy the quarter-UK verions for about £40, which is much less of a mistake if you find you hate it. I'd rather spend an extra £10 if I like an application than risk wasting £150 !

I see that version 3 has been upgraded to version 4 (Global Navigator) so I can't comment on the current product, but you can download a free trial from the Fugawi website. It may not allow you to evaluate the PDA application (v3 didn't) but you can try out the map importing and calibration process, to see if you find it acceptable. To be honest, I found just chopping the Fugawi 2 maps into <1600 sqkm files for the PPC quite a chore.

Versions 2 (UK) and 3 (everywhere else) were quite similar, except v2 was crippled by the OS license restrictions (i.e. no map importing or calibration, etc.). I see v4 claims an improved User Interface, and there was certainly scope for that! I outlined my reasons for disliking the PDA version last month, in this forum.

Are you aware of this link:

Cheers, Alan.
