Positioning with a wifi iPad?

Drove across town last night running the Maps app on my WiFi only non jailbroken iPad3 and was surprised to see my position (blue dot with outer white ring) being continuously tracked

Before leaving home I had cached the local area, the WiFi was ON but showing "not connected", and bluetooth off

Was this just a case of the device recognizing known home WiFi networks as I am not aware of any Wide Area networks in Southport?

If so, I was amazed how smooth and accurate the tracking was on the five mile trip through this residential area and how comprehensive the mapping of these networks is
