I am a volunteer Community First Responder for my local ambulance service, which means I need to get from A-B as quickly as possible (within the road regulations).

I have tried various sat nav apps on my Android phone, as well as an older standalone TomTom unit, and they all have similar issues in that they will try to route me onto the nearest main road before going along to my destination.

I have tried adjusting the preset road speeds for the different road types (local/B/A/Dual carriageway - 10mph/20mph/30mph etc) to various settings, but I cannot seem get it to take me on a direct but fast route to the destination. I either end up going out of my way to get onto a main road before coming off to the local streets, or it takes me on a convoluted (shorter) side streets route which actually takes longer when allowing for the junctions and turning times!

I do try to use a real map when possible, but sometimes only the sat nav will do!

Does anyone have any tips on getting a good balance between speed/short distance in general, and/or navigon/copilot specific tips?

Thanks! Smile

Les.

As for the sat-nav prefering to get you onto a main road quickly, I'm beginning to find the main roads now often ARE faster than my old back-doubles. That seems to have changed over the last couple of years.

For info, the new TomTom models do have a new "Eco route" option, which is supposed to be somewhere in-between "fastest" and "shortest".

On the little testing I've done with it so far though, I've not seen it differ much from "fastest".
