Hi
I'm really struggling to decide on my next GPS which I solely use for Geocaching.

I currently use a Garmin eTrex H which, lets face it, is a little dinosaurish..but gets the job done, albeit with supplementary paperwork.

I've narrowed the search down to either a Satmap or a Memory Map Adventurer (2800 or 3500). I'm currently favouring the Satmap, but as I already have Memory Map v5 on my computer covering the whole of the UK except Scotland, the Adventurer sounds more economical with or without the free mapping on offer just now.

Can anybody help in my decision making process, or is it a 'no brainer'?

If you have got Memory Map v5 maps and have an android phone why not try the app MM Tracker. Do not geocache myself and the app may not have all the things you need for geocacheing. There is a free version (and a website) to try it out before you buy. It will certainly save you buying new maps.

I upgraded from an Etrex Legend H to the newer Etrex 20, and use it with free maps from www.talkytoaster.info

I use it for hiking and geocaching, and love it Very Happy

Thanks for the reply Alan....Neither of us has an Android phone (whatever that is!)....we are both fit but elderly, and our mobiles are about 10 years old and PAYG!

Thanks sussamb...will look into that.

I Would not buy a Memory Map unit lots of bad posts around if you look for them. I had a 2800 and the battery life was shocking from full to flat in 3 hours. It did not take info from web sites such as geocaching.com I have now swaped it out for a Satmap which is great comes with full 1:50K OS in the box for free and will be compatible with your MM softwear for route planning, although Satmap have their own route planner. If it is only ever used for caching I would also look at a Magellan GC I have seen these in Cotswold and is designed purely for caching, it does not do OS mapping but if you are in or around towns the base map it comes with looks fine to me. It's also a damn site cheaper than a Satmap at about £140 compared to the £400 tag on a Satmap.

When you can buy an Android phone for less that £100 and with a choice of GPS 'Apps' from free to less than a tenner then it is a 'no brainer'!

I'm a keen walker and just documented a series of trails in the Canaries (El Hierro) for a book using an Android phone and MyTrails. I would never go back to a dedicated GPS as they are too expensive, heavy and restricted in what they do.

Each to their own. I'd never risk having all my eggs in one basket, for me it'll always be a phone and a separate GPS Wink

Many thanks for all contributions. After many hours of sifting through reviews, pricing and availability, I have finally plumped for the Garmin eTrex 20, purchased on Amazon for the amazing price of £135!!

It wasn't my first choice....that went to Satmap, but the satmap pricing killed that idea. I think that the Garmin will be ideally suited to the applications I have in mind for it, but only time will tell if I made the right decision.
