Slow Map Download. Is this normal?? HELP

I have a new 2595LMT and I use Windows 7 and my broadband speed is 2mb. I am downloading the latest Europe map update and this is the first time update I have downloaded.

It tells me that this is going to take 7 hours!.

Is that correct, do they really take this long or is there something I need to be doing to speed things up?

Yep, the last update took 8 hours and 1 hour to upload to the Garmin.
I usually do it overnight to avoid my download quota for the month.

2mb broadband would give you a rough maximum download speed of 200KB per second. n reality if you are on ADSL this could average out at 100KB per second.

So 1MB would take about 10-12 seconds.
1GB would be about 12,000-15,000 seconds (3-4 hours)

Depending on the map size it could easily be trying to get 1.5-3GB so yeah, it could take a good 7 hours Smile

Thanks to all for the info.

Bit of a shock and it took 10 hours in the end, then it started to validate the download and not knowing how long that would take I just gave up!

Will try agin this morning.

Part of the problem is also the transferring between your PC and the nuvi, given that it'll be using a USB port. BTW ensure you're plugged directly into a USB port, problems can apparently occur if you try via a USB hub.

There is one thing though that many of us could do; if you have EU maps do you really need ALL of the EU? I just download the Western Europe section, which is about half the full EU mapset.

Yes, I just get the North-west section of Europe and even that is over 4GB. I might look at a smaller map next time.

If I could hitch onto this post:

I'm just downloading the latest map update, 2012.40, for what I believe to be the whole of Europe (last time round about 2.3 GB) - whereas all I want to install are the UK and Ireland maps (about 400 MB, I think).

Is it really necessary to download all this data and "waste" over 80% of it?

Is there no intelligent way just to download the UK & Ireland maps?

Or am I misunderstanding something fundamental...?

I have always used the GarminMapUpdater.exe program which you can download instead of the program Garmin prefer you to use which automatically gets the updates for you.

I prefer to have control over what my computer is up to and when it happens.

In this program you have control of what map section to download and where you want it on your computer if you use MapSource for instance.

I don't seem to have GarminMapUpdater.exe on my system, so I'd be grateful if you could give a hand-holding explanation of how to obtain it! Does it handle the Lifetime Update maps?

When you log onto myGarmin and then update maps select Option 2. Look out for the Install Options on one of the screens (bottom left). This enables you to select to install to PC only, and will download Mapinstall.Exe for you ... you should find it in your Programs, Garmin folder.

Click on it once the maps have downloaded to your PC and the wizard guides you through the map install process on to your nuvi.
