Sold my 720 about a year ago, the guy who bought it says it wont boot up now. After 6 months I cleared the back-up from my computer for more space.
Can someone please help us as what to do to get it wotking again, ( have done a reset to no avail) Will Tomtom help? Thanks.

Will it connect to a PC? Or doesn't it get as far as the Yes/No screen.

If it does connect, can you see it as an external drive in Windows Explorer?

Presumably the guy who bought it had it working for some time, so what was he doing just before it wouldn't Boot Up?

Rather than write it all out again, try these summaries of the usual "fixing" techniques that I did for another forum:

Hi Guys, have now got the 720 and have found a 2nd back-up on a sd card I did. When starting it I get the drum roll and Tomtom logo but goes no further, when connected to computer it takes its time, then I see drives R and Q (not Tomtom), it then tells me the drive needs formatting before it can be accessed, I try to do this with Windows but it says cannot fomat drive.
Where can I go next please. Tried Tomtom Home but it does not see unit.

Do you have a card reader - since you have an older back up on an SD card I guess you do!

What happens when you put the SD card into the reader, having taken it out of the 720? I have a 930 which is not recognised by my PC - but the SD card is and will boot Home. I then replace the SD card and run it from the card.

Thanks yes I have just finished doing that, then connected to Tomtom home via card reader, Home updates the card ok, When I insert the card and turn 720 on ,I can now get as far as the yellow line loading across the bottom of the screen, then screen comes up with Tomtom go and a road scene and clouds, but can get no further .

Sounds like the internal memory has failed (not uncommon on those models at this age).

If you have put EVERYTHING on the SD card, then it SHOULD boot from the card and use that. I have a Go720 like that, and I've been using it with a card for ages.

However, one possibility is that the software version on the card you have is too old for the boot loader installed on the Go itself now.

So as rfp2001 suggests, try the card in a card reader and see if Home recognises it as a TomTom. If it does, try updating to the latest software on that and then see if it works in the machine.

Thanks Andy, yes the Tomtom card in the card reader is seen by Home and it updates it, but on inserting it into Tomtom will go no further after yellow load line and stops with the picture of Tomtom road scene, picture flickers bright for a moment then stops on the picture. Have to reset to turn it off.

By the way a new battery has been fitted to this unit, also I have just got a infomation screen up and halfway down it says : Start-up Mode: ( Sleep) would this be why it will not boot up.

Here's something else to try - put the SD card back in the card reader and open up the file system. Look for a file called "MapSettings.cfg" and delete it (you still have a back up of it stored I think). Sign out the card through Home as usual, remove the card from the reader and then replace it. Home should make another one automatically. Replace the card into your TT, turn it on and see what happens then.

No, that's quite normal. It just means that the last start-up was FROM sleep (i.e. from a normal switch off)

MapSettings.cfg lives in the map folder (The folder called Europe or something similar depending on which map you have). If it is there and you delete it then the TomTom creates a new one when you next switch it on, this might help your TomTom to start.

It won't help to install one from another TomTom.
