All, road maps are updates of a previous one, and he can get 4 updates for less than a new UK map |
Eh, you said you're getting 4 maps, you are not, you are getting 4 updates to the map you have. Now calm down. |

But that's just the same as saying this year's AA Road Atlas is just an update from last year's. It isn't, it's a completely new map that has all the latest road changes in it.
And If I want to get excited, I will. So there, and by the way, my dad's bigger than your dad. |

Just picked one up at a Nottingham store and there were a few other stores around the country showing stock, but they are getting hard to find.. | Unfortunately, that's only for TTs under 90 days old. I benefited from the 18 months for 12 offer, but looks like it'll be full price this time! I still think it makes sense to pay for the updates, when it is cheaper than a new map. _________________ Jock

I disagree with you. And comparing the price of printed maps to digital is a false comparison. Printed maps have added production and shipping costs, electronic maps can be sold direct very easily. Also, TomTom is getting a lot of update info for free from its users. I have submitted well over 50 myself in the last year. |

A quick look back at what I've paid over the past few years ...
September 2008 - £41.70 (This included a one-off charge to bring the map up-to-date).
October 2009 - £27.80
October 2010 - £19.80
November 2011 - £22.48
So if they are currently asking for £37.48, that does indeed show a significant price hike over recent years. _________________ Garmin DriveSmart 50 LMT-D |

It is. There is probably more work involved in the digital maps. All the extra turn restriction data, the road speed limits etc etc.
mccririck wrote: | Printed maps have added production and shipping costs, electronic maps can be sold direct very easily. |
Bandwidth (especially for large gigabyte maps) gets expensive. As does server storage space. Plus, the manufacturers don't buy ready-made maps, they buy the raw data which then needs converting into the required format - this adds a lot of production cost.

So that's 50 extra bits of work for someone to integrate into the map JUST from you! Imagine all the millions of people who have submitted data that all needs processing - that doesn't happen for free you know!
So yes, you're right, you can't compare the costs of printed maps to digital maps.

Anyway, I was bluffing about my dad and guessed Daggers might see through the bluff. He died in 2000 Basically, I'm a southern softypants scaredycat and don't want to be seen as a cyber bully . |

Well, they claim in the email that the proper price is £74.95, so the hike is even bigger still. It's just that they are giving a 50% discount. While oddly, the web price is £44.95, and not the £74.95 claimed.
We should probably consider VAT and exchange rate changes in these comparisons. |

I think the exchange rate could well be the biggest issue here. Are we able to get historical Euro prices from TT or perhaps historical exchange rates to convert back to Euros the prices Daggers paid previously?

Historical exchange rates:
Oct 09 1.09 Euro/£
Oct 10 1.14 Euro/£
Nov 11 1.16 Euro/£
Now 1.2 Euro/£
So Daggers prices converted to Euro prices (ignoring the first one as that included updating the map)
Oct 09 £27.80 = E30.30
Oct 10 £19.80 = E22.57
Nov 11 £22.48 = E26.08
Now £37.48 = E44.98 _________________ Paul |

Yes, my Dad is pretty small, but I'm not sure what his relevance is. I wasn't involved in the argument, so it's a bit unfair to pick on my Dad. _________________ Garmin DriveSmart 50 LMT-D |
