Hi new guy and leaner here

VERY basic questions im afraid
1 What is a base map
2, Does the e trex legend have an altimeter and elec compass,
3, do the street maps tell you how to get somewhere or just where you are in the town (if you see what i mean )
4 Is it worth paying abit extra for the e trex legend with euro bundle over the e trex summitt (i do a little walking)

Thanks for your time

Dave

Welcome

1) A basemap is a basic map that's pre-loaded into the ROM of the handheld GPS Receiver. It is a very basic map with in most cases only major roads, no minor ones, and very little or no POI's. The basemap isn't that accurate either, so you could be a mile or more off where it thinks you are, it's better to use MapSource CD's for Garmin mapping handhelds or MapSend/DataSend for Magellan ones.

2) I believe the Vista is the only eTrex with barometric altimeter and electronic compass.

3) Just where you are in town, unless you go for a GPSMAP 60C/60CS in which chase they will give you turn by turn information on-screen but no voice guidance.

4) Basically the Europe bundle for the Legend comes with MetroGuide, it'll give you streets but not topographical information.

The electronic compass can come in handy on the Vista or GPSMAP 76S because it will point correctly like a compass providing you hold it level and still, where as the Garmin's that don't have an electronic compass require GPS, so you have to have a GPS fix, and be moving for it to tell roughly in which direction you are travelling.

If you want a compass then my advice would be to go for the Vista or if you don't mind a larger GPS with a larger screen, then the GPSMAP 76S is still a good buy. If you want colour, then there's the new GPSMAP 76C/CS that's going to be coming out in the next month or so.

Take a look at some of our handheld GPS Reviews
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/menu_gpshardware4.php

We've got reviews on the Summit and Vista, plus the GPSMAP76 (without electronic compass and altimeter) The 'S' review will be available soon.
