|
|
I'm staggered by the price of the annual map update service at £37.48 (supposedly discounted) which seems like an enormous hike from what I paid last year.
Are there any alternative sources for this service or have TT got one by the short and curlies?
Any suggestions?

For what map?
Also a ONE TIME purchase of a UK map is now £39.95, Western Europe is £49.95 and full Europe is £59.95.
So that price for a year (4 maps) seems quite good.
But I can't remember how much they were last year.
There are no other legal sources of TomTom maps.
But one alternative is to simply not to update! Are you actually seeing problems on your normal routes. A lot of people only update every couple of years if they aren't particularly bothered by errors. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

It is expensive, I got 18 months for £30 last year. (Western Europe). Also when you consider the updates are about a year behind when errors are first reported it is a rip off. And you are not getting 4 maps you are getting 4 updates to one map. There may be minimal difference between them for all you know.
I would hold off until it drops to £30 or under tbh. |

All, road maps are updates of a previous one, and he can get 4 updates for less than a new UK map |

I wouldn't say that £37.48 was much for 4 updates over a year... Back in the day () I remember when a single map update was about £100. And were only available once a year.
It's less than £10 for each update, about £3 per month.
Again though, as others have mentioned, you don't HAVE to update the maps all the time.

You'll won't convince me that the current map update pricing structure represents value for money, not until it's possible to know preciseley what each update includes. |

Simples - each map update contains up to 25% of up to 15% of changes throughout Europe. Slightly complicated by the fact that my maps are only UK&ROI and I'm not sure what percentage UK&ROI is of Europe. But I'm hoping they've changed M4 over the Severn Bridge back to 70mph and reopened the A40 into London.
(Dammit, I said I was giving up sarcasm!)
The really annoying thing for me is I lose my Home location and (3) Favourites every map update on my Carminat - and before we all jump in with advice, there isn't a MapSettings.cfg on the Carminat AND you can't "Operate my Carminat" on the computer - all the settings have to be done using the remote control in the vehicle. _________________ Dennis

When you consider that a single 2012 AA Road Atlas retails at £20 I think 4 UK & ROI map updates a year for less represents good value - Also, TomTom regularly do 6 updates for the price of 4 so better still! |

A new DVD with updated maps for my Honda is over £200. As stated above, I'll stick with my 2009 maps and overcome any slight deviations when they occur. _________________ Satnav:

As far as I know updated maps for the BMW are also over £200 and with navigation that pales in comparison. |

Have you any idea why Honda and BMW update DVDs are so expensive - face it, copying a DVD is even simple enough for me to do!
Or maybe it's just that Honda and BMW owners are so rich they can charge them the earth and they don't notice? _________________ Dennis

According to TomTom: "Every year, roads in Europe change significantly – by as much as 15%." That's in all European countries so how many roads in the UK & ROI change significantly - not many I suggest, nowhere near 15%. I'd guess it's in single figures, less say it's 8% to be generous.
So you're paying for four (or six) map updates a year and on each one, on average, at least 98% of the roads are unchanged.
I reckon I can live with my out of date maps, happy in the knowledge that should I stray off that 98% of unchanged roads, I'll have enough commonsense to find my way back. |
