hi all. I have been using a medion 96800 that I bought in Aldi in 2005.
it was converted with the help of Niallf on this forum to run tomtom navigator 5 and it has proved itself invaluable for nearly six years. during that time I obtained maps for UK, europe, australia and the USA. all the maps worked fine on the medion unit.

the australia map is a bit old now so I bought a new tomtom XXL540 today here in australia for $147.00 (as i thought that was really cheap)
it was supplied (I hope) with the latest australia map (v835.2419.)

I loaded all the maps that I had used on the medion unit , the tomtom unit shows that they are all on the hard drive but it is askng for activation codes. I don't have them, is there a way to make the maps work?

Nope.

TomTom units 'expect' and work with only legitmate maps purchased from Tomtom or provided on sd cards where available.

In other words, TomTom maps are locked to the device first installed upon. If you got TomTom maps to work on another device, it was through the use of hacked maps or application or both.

And for the record we don't do piracy here. So feel free to cease discussion.

In exbootneck's defence.... he's not trying to use pirated maps in the sense of nicking them off the internet....

A lot of people honestly believe that once they have bought a device with some maps on it, then they "own" the maps.

Unfortunately, that's not the way things work with software, you didn't BUY the maps, you just bought a licence to use them in the way the manufacturer specifies.

In the case of these TomTom maps, you're licenced to use them on the TomTom hardware you bought them with, but they aren't transferrable. So as far as the law is concerned it's piracy just the same.

thanks for the replies fellas. I can see that I've poked a bear with a stick as regards to piracy.
In my own defence, I bought the maps from a user on this forum, I believed that they were then mine to use on any device that I owned, clearly this is not possible so please consider this thread closed.

ps the UK and USA maps were designed for TT navigator 5, so they probably would not work anyway.
