Is there a way that you can set the Garmin 1490LMT to perform a more sensible route? I’m trying to get from A to B, easiest route is via 3 motorways, and this is the way my old TomTom used to take me. The Garmin keeps try to get me to cut across country.

I believe it’s down to the map suppliers to perform the actual routing, but I’d quite like to change the preferences in the way the Garmin takes me to destinations. I’ve tried using MapSource and BaseCamp both of which indicate they will take me the way that I want to go when the preferences are set accordingly, but when I upload the route to the Garmin, it reverts back to the cross country routes. Is it possible to be more strict in the choice of roads for routing, i.e M-Ways first, A-Roads second, etc. etc. ? I don’t mind being re-routed when there are traffic issues, but on the majority of occasions there are not.

First thing is to check your avoidance settings to make sure they are not influencing the route, and then make sure your setting is set to 'fastest route' (if that's what you want). Bear in mind though that even if you are set to 'fastest' the nuvi may still feel cross country is quicker.

You say your Garmin 'keeps trying to take you'. If you think another way is quicker just drive it, eventually the nuvi will pick it up.

Sending routes to the nuvi doesn't send the route, it sends the start, finish and via points. The nuvi then recalculates depending on its settings ... if it doesn't take you the way you'd like to go then you need to put more 'via points' into your route until it does follow what you want.
