With Nokia downsizing in an effort to turnaround the ailing business , news that it plans to cut 3,500 jobs in it's commerce, manufacturing and mapping divisions will not be welcomed bu NAVTEQ employees. This announcement comes on the heels of the loss of 4,000 jobs in Nokia's Symbian and R&D divisions recently.

Nokia will be closing down it's NAVTEQ mapping and location based services (LBS) operations in Bonn, Germany and Malvern, USA with an expected loss of 1,300 jobs in those divisions. Business operations will consolidate in the Berlin, Boston and Chicago offices.

Nokia, once a business that enjoyed huge and long term success has seen its business decimated with the rise of Android and iOS smartphones. Its decision to concentrate on Symbian and Maemo saw it fall from favour and the partnership with Microsoft, where it will use the Windows phone operating system in future models has been viewed as the final nail in its coffin.

"Final nail in coffin"... I don't know

What choice did they have? Android is buggy, unstable and pretty much a platform built on unlicensed code from other peoples work. It may be experiencing huge growth now, but most of the people I now with an Android are unlikely to buy again

Apple? Clean easy to use system, but looks dated now and lacks real interaction with the user - relying on standalone apps

WP7 Mango is super quick, slick and very easy to use. It provides much fusion between the user the unit and their data in a much more interactive way and a system you could easily give to a new comer to smartphones or a poweruser

WP7 just needs some slick hardware to show it off - HTC Titan is coming, as is the new Nokia range based on the beautiful N9

Maybe times have changed regarding market dominance (I think it will be much more of a shared market) but with this essential restructuring, they will be back in the leading pack in terms of relevance

...And all with Navteq mapping onboard a successful WP7 platform and built in to Bing, could help Navteq too
