A week of so ago we took a look at the new range of Garmin nüvi navigation devices at Garmin's UK headquarters in the UK. IFA was the first time that the public was able to see them and have a look at some of the new functionality.

In our video we talk to Clive Taylor Garmin's director of Product Management who gives us a quick tour of the devices and the new features.

No sign of NuLink services anymore or didn't I understand it correctly?
They're sticking to TMC traffic with all its downsides Sad

There are two separate ranges: the nuvis (highlighted here) and the nuLinks. They didn't release any unlink devices this time round, but they are still a critical part of the product line-up.

I was in the assumption that the Nuvi 2012 line was finally an attempt to streamline their product line. Appearantly not.

I hope that they'll bring out some nuLink device with guidance 3.0 (or at least 2.0) soon or make eg the 1695 work as it should.

This maybe the case in Europe but I have been told by the largest Garmin distributor in Canada that there will be no further nuLink devices released in Norh America. Never went over very well here.

And why January for the UK when the US gets the same unit anytime now? I would love to try the 34xx series out, but feel by January I would be purchasing "old" (well, four month old Laughing Out Loud) units, so may well not bother...

Did they say why?

And - without giving too much information away - are new NuLink units coming to the UK or have Garmin decided TomTom HD Traffic just cannot be caught?

They do believe that live services are an essential part of the lineup and there will be improvements in traffic. I am not aware of any new nulink devices at the moment, but then they were released not too long ago.

Mike

Thanks for the very informative report.

In your opinion, how does the 3490 compare with the 3790 - is it much of an advance and does the routing/POI searching seem twice as fast as Garmin are claiming??

Is there a view on the 3490 pricing and will there be LMT and non LMT models?

Xtraseller - I remember that the 37XX series was launched in UK / Europe well before the North American market, it may well be that Garmin are switching this on the grounds of equality or to counter the recent Tom Tom activity over there.

Interestingly, there seem to be very few "traditional" retailers selling the 37XX now (Tesco and Comet have delisted the SKU).
