XL Live W Europe mapping
hi this seems to be happening more often now. i have had this unit for around a month but for no apparent reason the unit whilst in use will switch itself off and back on again (no drum roll is heard) but it then takes a while, maybe a minute or so, to lock back onto the satelites. most annoying.
is this an unusual problem or an inherent fault with this unit? this may happen twice or three times a day. i do use it constantly during the day.
many thanks. |

Sadly, it is an inherent fault with all the Live units (perhaps I should add "in MY experience", but I do know of others having it). We generally find it happening as the unit seeks to lock onto the Traffic Server (it will do that whenever it loses the signal and most often happens when you first switch on after it's been switched off, but does so also as you are running - really BAD).
There doesn't seem to be a permanent cure, but the usual temporary solutions are :-
The ClearFlash utility from TomTom (if you haven't used it before, it does no harm, sometimes does some good, you need to run it several times at once and it doesn't show you it is doing anything - just run it at least three times, more if you've got nothing else to do!!!). See how it behaves after this.
Reformat and reinstall (if you don't know how to do this, DON'T!).
If you've only had it for a month, maybe you should consider if this is what you want from it, or to take it back for a refund (don't bother messing around with sending it away for repair, it won't be a permanent cure, believe me!). _________________ Dennis

Also... did you copy a version of MapSettings.cfg over from an older unit?
I've found in the past that even if it seems to transfer over OK, it might have minor inconsistencies that can cause freezes and/or re-boots.
(Before anyone suggests it, this is even after the fix of adding a new Favourite in Home's emulator) _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

I have also found the XL LIVE is VERY sensitive to how you disconnect it from a PC, and has a habit of introducing file corruption.
I always eject the device from within HOME, wait until it reboots, answer No to connecting to the computer, then power the unit off. Then unplug the USB cable. |

Also try a cold boot - hold the power button down until you see a load of small white text on the screen showing battery voltage and serial numbers etc.
Now press the power button again and the unit will turn off. Normally, all you do is put it in to standby.
When it has powered down, press the power button again and it will boot from cold. Rumour has it you lose all your cached traffic data and quickgpsfix doing this and it does take a minute or so to lock on to a satellite again. |
