Best app for iPhone 3G

What navigation app do people recommend for the iPhone 3G, specifically?

I have an iPhone 4 and use the TomTom app, but I recall that it was a bit sluggish on the 3G (it's over a year since I used navigation on the 3G so I'm a bit behind the times).

My wife now uses my old 3G and I'd like to put a nav solution on it for her. She's used to the TomTom interface from the PND side which might be an advantage. She will only use basic routing, no bells and whistles.

So is the current TomTom app usable on a 3G? If not, what's the best (as in most performant) alternative?
