Nuvi 1490 - postcodes & house names

Hi,
When finding a place by using the post-code one has to enter the house number - in country areas most houses 9including mine) do not have as a number.
This seems to confuse the Nuvi! - especialy if one puts in a fictious house number.
Entering addresses when shopping on-line etc always brings up a list of possible house names to select.
I queried this with Garmin - the response was:
Unfortunately you cannot search via a house name and I do not believe this is possible on any GPS device. Postcodes only include numbers and house names are not included in address databases. It is possible that a house can be named whatever the property likes so there could be multiple houses with the same name and these could change frequently and there is no system available to record this data. Currently this is something that is not possible and I would not expect GPS devices to include this feature any time soon. We do apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
Not a good answer! If the Post Office and Councils can cope with infrequent house name changes - Garmin maps should be able to!
Do other SatNavs cope with this?

I must admit, I think the Garmin rep. is right on that point, I don't know of any stand-alone sat-nav that can cope with house names.
(Actually, you should probably count yourself lucky... TomToms have problems with a lot of house numbers!!)

How I think it works on sat navs is that a street has additional data to mark just a few house numbers, such as the ones on each side of the road at each end, and maybe a couple in the middle. The system then guesses where the ones in-between should be.
(You can actually see this on TomTom maps because the "known" numbers are shown in little boxes on the map screen).

That obviously doesn't take up much extra storage space, but if the maps had to include every house name as well they would require MASSIVE amounts of storage.
That's possible to do on-line on the huge Post Office databases, but not on a little in-car device.

I suppose a method could be produced on the "LIVE" models with SIM cards inside to do an internet look-up, but I don't know of one so far.

And there's no need to put in a house number, just skip that bit, then at least the nuvi won't get 'confused' as you put it.

I go to house names and numbers daily using (mainly) my TomTom 1000 and sometimes of of my Garmins - all have the latest maps, and I find the TomTom data is most accurate for house numbers (ie. in streets and towns), in fact often incredibly accurate

For house names in rural locations, compared to a few years back they are both great. Choosing centre of postcode (as they do when no number exists), more often than not they get me where I want to go with a little slow driving and watching out for house signs, it is typically 1-5 houses covered in country locations with sparse numbers of houses

That doesn't make it any less annoying when you are in the lane next across and late!

However, back to the point, the Royal Mail system which I also use lists the house name but in my experience doesn't pin-point them any more accurately than my Garmin or TomTom
