New maps are due mid August so they will not fall inside the 30 days unless you keep the unit in its box for a few weeks.

When does the 30 day countdown start, switching the unit on or connecting to home ?

General thinking is 'first use' which seems to mean getting a satellite fix. Some people never connect to Home with their devices.

Which could make map updates tricky!

The problem with leaving the device for more than 30 days is if you have a problem using the LMG and contact TomTom support they will want to see the receipt and if it is more than 30 days old, they may not support the LMG.
