I'm driving around Europe in August with the Europe CamerAlert database running on my TomTom One. I have it set to give MPH warnings in the UK, and KPH warnings in Europe, using the PocketGPSWorld instructions and voice warning files.

I've now found that using camera alerts in Germany is illegal, but the database isn't split into countries - so I can't just remove the Germany POIs.

Alternatively, I would disable the alerts whilst driving in Germany and then turn them back on again when I leave. But I can't find a way to do that on my TomTom without removing the alerts - and then there's a long manual process to set them back up again.

Hope this makes sense. Grateful for any suggestions of how to resolve the issue.

Thanks,

James

Does your unit have a memory card slot? if so you could have a second card loaded with the same mapping data etc but without the European speed camera files, simply swap the cards out when you cross in/ out of Germany - Mike

Good idea but unfortunately, this model doesn't have a slot. I'll have my laptop with me so I guess I could delete the POIs and then upload them again once I've left Germany. But I'll be driving direct from the Channel to Germany with no overnight stops. I suppose I could boot up the laptop before I enter Germany and wipe the POIs...

I hope I'm not encouraging you to break the law (if it is one yet) but I'm just letting you know that I don't worry about it when going to Germany. It might be different if my stay was longer than a few days. Personally, I'd get to my destination first and delete the POI's there rather than at the roadside as I am crossing the border. I work on the principle that if it is illegal, TomTom and Garmin would not be offering them for installation. They would drop them like hot potatoes if there was even a hint that they could be sued for supplying prohibited information.

And there have still been no prosecutions for this in Germany. This is some bizarre regional legislation which has not been adopted by the state.

Whilst that doesn't prevent it from being enforced, I'm told by German colleagues that it will never be policed until adopted as German state law.

Given that many satnav manufacturers continue to offer and pre-load speed cam data for Germany (even sales IN Germany), this is, for now at least, a non-issue.
