Isn't this the sort of thing the Highways Agency Traffic Officers were invented for?
I know they have limited powers, but don't they have authority to stop cars and advise them of driving rules such as lane discipline?

Unfortunately not. See here and here for details of what they can do.

The role of a Traffic Officer involves:
[SNIP]
educating road users

That would cover it. Lane discipline could be easily dealt with by them.

Although I concede that this isn't really within their current remit, it would make sense that they be granted powers to deal with minor stuff such as this.

It would take a lot more training, than they get now, in order to give lucid evidence in court. More than a week in a classroom.

It's a lot harder than you think to be lead, or sole, witness in a motoring case.

These DfT motorway patrols are like the APO's on the streets now, some of them are ok so long as they stay within the confines of their training/ job description but some of them have their own ideas.

I'm an ex-Police Officer so hope I would have at least some idea of what is involved. But we are talking about offences that would fall within the fixed penalty umbrella, not serious offences that would require court attendance in normal circumstances.

Personally I dislike the whole idea of Highways Officers and CPO's, it's more dumbing down. But that's another discussion entirely.

Yes Darren, we obviously have similar backgrounds and I agree with you about Highway Officers & CPO's except I call it policing on the cheap (You pay peanuts etc.......)

A lot of this discussion refers to undertaking & cutting off/ chopping in, this would all come withing Due Care & Attention or Reckless/ Dangerous Driving all having a high probability of court time and you know how careful & attention to detail you have to be prior to giving evidence.

I just hope that if the suggestions go through it increases the number of dedicated Police Officers.
