My dads looking at a new sat nav as his old 710 about on its last legs. We've been having a look online and halfords are selling for £199.99 with £20 cash back and 1 years free traffic. However just found pentagongps.co.uk have some for £155.87 (£6 delivery) but these are non Live models. Just wondering if I bought a non Live model would I still be able to add the Live traffic services to it? Guessing by the time I add the cost of adding Live from tomtom its probably not worth it but would just be helpful to know.

Thanks

Have a look at a new 750 Live from Here as you will get the LMG as well as 12 months worth of Live services thrown in for £149:99

I would also suggest you order a 4GB MicroSD card so you can load the latest full map to the card as the built in memory hasn't got adequate storage for the latest "bloated map"

You can't add Live services to devices without a built in modem so your idea of purchasing a non Live device isn't viable - Mike

Cheers mike that rules out the non live model then, will give that link a look though, think my dads looking at the 125 as it has a 5" screen which would be a lot better for him, the only thing that worries me is the the 125 has no SD slot so not sure how he would copy all the items which he has on his 710. We've also seen the 125 Live on amazon for £185 with £20 cash back. It's all a bit of a mine field if you ask me. Cheers for your help

The big issue with these new devices such as the Via 125 is the fact you cannot see the internal memory, folders or files from the PC using the traditional method i.e. Windows Explorer.

You can add certain files to the device using a new Web Based "Clud" interface (oops there goes my spelling again) but TomTom control what you can and cannot do, too restrictive for me.

At least the 750 Live used the traditional way to comunicate with the PC so nothing will change from what you are used to in terms of connectivity to the PC if you opt for that device - Mike

He'll most probably find the 750 Live screen quite big too after a 710.

I don't think he will see any difference between a 710 and 750 as the screens are the same size - Mike

Cheers Mike, the big problem is my dads a truck driver so has about 200 drops saved on current TT, do you know if these could be copied on to the 125? Also have bridge heights saved but guessing these probably won't copy.

Might he not be better off with a Work version, designed to allow input of vehicle size and weight, which should automatically select routes suitable for trucks? It might avoid him getting stuck in unsuitable narrow roads.

With the latest software and "MyTomTom" version you CAN copy your old user-POI categories to the new models now.

So if your dad has the "drops" and the Low Bridges saved as POIs then you can get them working on the Via although it is a rather slow process at the moment. It is the same procedure as the speed camera database so use the instructions for that.

I did a post last week with the links to the instructions and a way to get spoken warnings working on thee new models, see here:
Creating spoken camera alerts on the Go1000/5 and VIA models
