Quote:
The UK may have become dangerously over-reliant on satellite-navigation signals, according to a report from the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Use of space-borne positioning and timing data is now widespread, in everything from freight movement to synchronisation of computer networks.

The academy fears that too many applications have little or no back-up were these signals to go down.

Receivers need to be capable of using a variety of data sources, it says.

Yes read this in the Telegraph. I'd no idea that you could buy GPS signal blockers. Don't know anything about them, but cannot believe that their range can present any problem to GPS users? Not even sure I can think of how they could be used illegally.

Also thought it a bit OTT to say there is a whole generation of motorists who cannot use road maps. They may not be used to using them, but it is not difficult to identify a route from a map, or go on-line and get a route from a provider organisation. Altogether the story seems a tad alarmist?

Assuming they have any sort of effective range: Set up a few GPS blockers around an estate 'for fun' to watch people getting lost. Someone has heart attack at home. Ambulance crew relying on GPS/SatNav to find patient are unable to do so due to jammed signal. Patient dies. Possible man-slaughter charge?
