pocketgpsworld.comThe Express and Star reports that speed cameras will remain operational across the West Midlands.

The area's police force, who receive income from speed awareness courses, have agreed to pay more than £1 million to keep fixed, mobile and traffic light cameras at high risk sites switched on.

Previous budgets for speed cameras in the West Midlands were handled by the area's councils through the West Midlands Road Safety Partnership, but following the government's budget cuts, the councils decided to save the £750,000 earmarked for funding "old style" speed cameras. They claimed that the old wet style film technology was outdated.

It's been also revealed that out of the 304 speed cameras in situ across the region, 86 are presently dummies.

£750,000 for 304 (-86)cams? That's only £3,440 each allowing for the dummies costing nothing. How does this stack up with the usual lies (sorry, figures) peddled out about how much it costs to keep a cam running?

So one might imagine they have some "new style" cameras and £3K+ is therefore not correct costing.

Shouldn't the topic headline be, "Speed Cameras to Fund West Midlands Police?"

Funny isn't it. When they operate the cameras using money collected in fines, the cameras cost an absolute fortune to operate and make little or no profit.

When they operate them using money out of their own policing budget, they magically find massive efficiency gains and cut the scamera partnership running costs dramatically. How does that work then? Evil or Very Mad
