I have account already for a normal GPS, however when I link this to my IPhone, I do not get updates. How do I get them?

Gear icon, Manage Cameras, Download Database

If that doesn't work what does happen? Error message?

Is that practical? Unlimited data plan? Permanent connection?

For sure, welcome to the 21st Century! Very Happy

Pretty much all iPhone plans have a data allowance which is large compared to the size of the download (1,000 Meg allowance, say the database is ~ 0.5 Meg per weekly download) and it's pretty much always on.

I would recommend that it's an optional setting, off by default but perhaps on the first update the user could be asked if they want to do this automagically from now on.

I'd be wanting the routine updates to run in the background though, not have to wait a minute or two every time it decides it needs an update.

The only exception is when you are international roaming. I don't know if there is a way for CamerAlert to detect this situation so the program can prompt the user for what to do. Roaming data charges can be extortionate.

Just a thought - perhaps one for the wish list...

Tadaaaa!!
I know my contract is OK, but I've heard of people who don't want the maps downloading for data charges. Also, there are times (like yesterday in Lydney) when I haven't got a connection of any sort and new technology things have a reputation (with me!) of throwing a tantrum if they can't do something they are told to do. Also somebody grumped the other day when he switched on CamerAlert in the office and it (automagically) announced in widely audible tones that he wasn't using the latest DB.

None of the above bothers me and I download updates as a matter of course when I set off or during my travels every day, not just once a week. Also my iPhone has Roaming disabled by default. I think what I was aiming at was your subsequent specification for it to be an optional user setting.

we could make it a switch thing - if the user has set it to "automagic" then it will just download silently. If not then the user will get the loud announcement in the meeting.

Data roaming is controllable on the device level, and CamerAlert would suffer from dried up pipes like all other apps.

Agreed. I leave the maps on for only near cameras. I can see why some people would want it switched off completely.

In this case I think the app should silently fail and try again later. If it's unable to do a download for more than a week (or whatever the stale timer is set to) then it can announce it's warning and hope the user isn't sitting in a meeting bored out of their mind. ;)

Lutz, the way you describe would be perfect mate. Go for it. Very Happy

Is there a way to rework the app so the verifiers can see a list of unverified cameras within XX miles/km of where they are, along with the list of upcoming cameras? That would be pretty cool too, though I know we're a pretty small number of users...
