Well it's not really Tele Atlas's fault is it? It's drivers, who choose to ignore road signs and rely on £99 SatNav's that aren't even intended for large vehicles.

Changing the map data will make no difference if the drivers continue to use basic satnav's designed for car users and it ignores the core issue, the idiot behind the wheel.

Because the firm I was subbing for only pay "shortest route", I selected that for my trip from Yeovil to Bath, BA21 4AT to BA1 6SG. They were paying 40 miles (£20), my fastest route said something like 47 (£23.50), so I changed to shortest, 39 miles. At one place, in the middle of the boondocks somewhere between Yeovil and Bath, my satnav directed me into a side road which carried a sign Maximum 6ft 6ins wide. Now my Kangoo van is inside that width so in I went, hoping that the narrow entrance would widen out further in. But it didn't. Not only did it not widen, it squeezed in and then went round a bend. I just missed both sides and a bit further on, it was so narrow that the undergrowth actually flattened my wing mirror to the body. That road WAS wide enough for my vehicle and I got through with the hair on the back of my neck standing on end - it takes quite something to do that, as I've driven well over half a million miles in the last 10 years.

My point is, however, that TT really shouldn't class that road as driveable. I remember reading somewhere on this forum that TT had reduced the number of categories of roads in their maps, so that former undriveable tracks had changed to apparently normal country roads and I've seen evidence of that - I often see side roads on the map which are grass tracks or paths. I know a spot close to home where one normal road is a farmyard and another is the gated entrance to a local dog and cattery, the satnav even tells me to turn right so as not to enter the place!

My van is car-based (there's a Renault Kangoo car). If I'd had a puncture, I don't think I could have opened the door wide enough for my girth to get out and certainly wouldn't have had space for a jack.

Guivre46 in that lane, the sat nav would have needed a cold chisel and lump hammer for the stone walls on the bend!
