It's getting to that time of year when I'm preparing for my skiing holiday. Does anyone have any feed back or advice about the use of GPS devices to track your skiing day?

Almost any GPS device will record your tracks and an excellent piece of software called GPSU will analyse the track; plot it on a map; show graphs of height v distance etc. The GPS needs a PC connection and needs to record either GPS or Barometric altitude.

Battery life may reduce in the cold so take spares or, if the GPS is rechargeable a top-up battery pack like this : http://www.morpethmobiles.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=%2FX10%2F%5FHTC%5FTyTn%5FII%5FUSB%5FPortable%5FBattery%5FPack which will probably recharge your phone, too.

Skiing is too fast with abrut changes in direction for most consumer GPS to track accurately. Good enough to know what runs you have done, but things like speeds etc won't be accurate.

GPS altitude is dodgy, due the geometry of the satalites you can see. It is possible to get GPS units that use Barometric pressure for altitude, which is way more accurate, provided it is calibrated att he start (and sometimes during) the day (Check out the Garmin range).
