|
|
The Irish Times has reported that John Twomey, an assistant Commissioner of the Irish police force, has announced that the number of people who lost their lives in road accidents after speed cameras were recently installed was just 8 compared to 37 for the same period last year. The period covered was November 16 to December 13.
He attributed the decline to the installation of new speed cameras. The new network is made up of mobile speed cameras covering approximately 600 areas throughout Ireland.
Twomey announced the data during the launch of the road safety campaign for the Christmas season and also confirmed that the number of people who suffered extensive injuries had also declined from 53 to 19.
Fachtna Murphy, the Commissioner of the Irish Police Force revealed that this year's road campaign was not aimed at getting people punished for speeding but to help educate them about risking untimely deaths and serious injuries.
There were 205 deaths as a result of collisions on Ireland's roads from January 1st up to December 16th, compared to 232 deaths in the same period in 2009. _________________ Robert Brady |

I'd like to see a statisticians response to such a statement - I suspect it will suggest insufficient data to prove anything _________________ J. |

Though they have compared the same period each year, you would need to know if road usage overall was the same. For instance the bad weather last January could have removed a significant number of vehicles from the roads.
That being said, they at least proclaim they intend to educate drivers about road safety, and nobody disagrees that a correctly placed camera with adequate road signage, does have an impact on speed related incidents. _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]

You also need to know whether last year's period (or this years come to that) was a statistical anomaly - or even if the two periods are opposite sides of random effects. It is far more complex to show correlation than people think _________________ J. |

Let's have another thread on 'Chaos Theory'.
We already have one for 'Catastrophe Theory', its called the G0100x
To be honest Amazon have the price of a Go1000 UK&RoI at £190, so I'm wavering. I bought a One XL with similar limitations at that price after all. _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]
