I have just broken my Tomtom XL1 windscreen mount. I need to get a new one but wondered if the windscreen mount was worth replacing or would it be better to get a dashboard mount?
What is the best replacement item, and any advice on best make please?

Which part has broken, if the part that interfaces directly with the device is still intact then have a read of This for an idea to re-use part of the existing mount fitted to a Brodit "Ball and Pro-Clip to suit your car. I appreciate the linked thread depicts a One Third Edition mount conversion but the same process applies to the One XL - Mike

If you are considering a dashboard mount then you have several options and factors to consider. Option wise you can get an adhesive disc that attaches to the dash and takes a suction mount, a mount with an adhesive foot, a mount that screws to the dash, or a friction cushion - a weighty base with a mounting disc for a suction mount in the middle. In deciding you need to take account of the slope of the windscreen ie is there sufficient room between the dash and the screen to take a mount, the layout of the dash ie is their a flat spot to take a mount - if there is, for a friction cushion you need something 6"x6", otherwise you need a cushion with more flexibility to cope with irregularities. Finally the mounting point on the satnav - is it high on the back, in the middle, or near the base. This affects either the total height of the assembly, or the amount of clearance for the connector plug to the power source.
You could also consider air-vent mounts and cup-holder mounts, though I'm not keen on the latter as they are generally quite low, and you have to take your eyes off the road for too long.
Once you have sorted that out you can take a look at the options. As I've posted before I tend to use Buybits.com that has a wide range of fitments [now much cheaper than they one were], and I've also received them next day.
