I am looking for some simple (cheap or free) software to run on a PocketPC with GPS. The primary requirement is to display an OS grid ref. This is so I can find a position on one of the many paper maps I have. One day I will upgrade to electronic maps :D

Also useful would be gridref based on UTM (for use with IGN maps in France).

Final nice to have's are to mark waypoints with notes (i.e. interesting places worth returning to) and normal compas/signal strength functions.

[I am planning to but a Bluetooth GPS with TomTom for route planning, but want something for walking etc.]

Thanks for any help.

Try my GPSMap-OS program. I'm still working on the finer points but it may suit your needs:

You might also want to look at Garmin's range of GPS units. They are not as flexible as a PocketPC (you can only load Garmin's maps and software on them) but they are ideal for outdoors use (waterproof, good battery life etc) and they do about 30 different map datums, OSGB included.

I am interested as well in something that doesn;t downloads maps, but uses a relative simple OS grid, with Waypoints and SOG stuff like that.

Or do I have to programme this myself???
